Preparations for Traveling Abroad with Your Dog

Preparations for Traveling Abroad with Your Dog

Hello, this is Kim's Pups, a specialty breeder shop for teacup puppies in South Korea.

Have you ever considered traveling abroad with your dog?

While humans might only need a passport and a carry-on, what preparations are necessary for dogs?

Many might not have thought about this in detail.

So, today, let's explore what you need to prepare when your dog must travel abroad.

There are various preparations required, and these can differ from country to country and situation to situation.

Here, we'll cover general guidelines, but please take these as references only.

Here are some universally applicable points:

First, Health Certificates and Vaccinations:

Most countries require a health certificate upon entry.

This certificate proves your dog's health status, especially which vaccinations it has received.

Different countries have different vaccination requirements, so check these before departure. There's also a blog post from Kim's Pups on this topic.

Rabies vaccination is mandatory and often must be given within a certain period before travel.

Since rabies vaccination takes about a month to become effective, ensure your dog gets vaccinated at least a month before departure and check for rabies antibody titers.

Remember, incomplete documentation can lead to your dog being quarantined for weeks or even returned, so thorough preparation is crucial.

Second, Additional Documentation per Country:

In Korea, you need an animal quarantine certificate from the Animal and Plant Quarantine Agency.

Since August 2024, the U.S. has changed its regulations, requiring additional documents.

Some countries might need a pet transport permit or a visit to a border quarantine station for certification.

In Europe, a pet passport is necessary. Countries like Korea without a pet passport system must issue EU-compliant documents and rabies antibody test results, then get a pet passport issued upon arrival.

Microchipping is almost universally mandatory, so we highly recommend it.

Thus, we at Kim's Pups suggest arriving early at the airport. Document processing can take time, and there might be unexpected procedures.

Third, Airline Requirements:

Each airline has its own rules for traveling with pets.

Allowed carrier sizes, weight limits, and even outright bans on pet travel vary.

Check both country entry procedures and airline pet policies thoroughly.

Also, inform the airline of your pet's travel during booking.

Fourth, Travel Essentials for Dogs:

Prepare a carrier that fits airline regulations, along with waste bags, water, food, and treats.

Ensure everything is ready in case the carrier cannot be opened during the flight.

Check that the carrier allows your dog to move comfortably.

Also, bring a leash and ID tag. While we hope it never happens, in case of loss, an ID tag is essential.

Fifth, Regulations and Preparations at the Destination:

If you plan to visit various places, check pet policies and restrictions beforehand.

Some countries are more pet-friendly than others.

Also, having emergency contacts and vet information handy is wise.

By thoroughly checking these items, we hope for a safe journey or move with your dog.

This is Kim's Pups. Thank you.
