Where Do Yorkshire Terriers Come From? Mill Rat-Catcher, War Hero Smoky & Victorian Lapdog (Teacup Yorkie Truth) 🐾
Breedpedia Ep.12 — the Yorkshire Terrier, from mill rat-catcher to war hero to Victorian lapdog, in about a minute.
Quick answer: The Yorkshire Terrier, or Yorkie, comes from Yorkshire in northern England, where Scottish weavers' small terriers were bred in the mid-1800s to catch rats in textile mills. Within a generation it became the lapdog of Victorian ladies, and in 1944 a 4-pound Yorkie named Smoky became a World War II hero. The breed standard calls for a weight of under 7 lb (3.2 kg), a height of about 7–8 in (18–20 cm), and a long, silky blue and tan coat that sheds very little. Yorkies live 13–16 years, rank in the AKC's top 15 breeds year after year, and were Korea's favorite small dog in the 1990s. A "teacup Yorkie" is a marketing term, not an official size.
Where do Yorkshire Terriers come from? 🏴
The Yorkie is a product of the Industrial Revolution. In the mid-1800s, Scottish workers moved south to the wool and cotton mills of Yorkshire and Lancashire, bringing their small working terriers with them: the Paisley and Clydesdale terriers, the Skye terrier and others, all now extinct or changed. Mill workers crossed them into a compact, long-coated terrier small enough to slip between looms, and early dogs were simply called "broken-haired Scotch terriers." The name Yorkshire Terrier became official in 1870.
The "father of the breed" was a show dog named Huddersfield Ben, born in 1865. He won at shows all over Britain and was such a popular stud that the American Kennel Club says his genes have reached virtually every Yorkie alive today. The breed reached America in 1872 and was registered by the AKC in 1885.
What were Yorkies bred for? 🐀
Rats. Victorian textile mills were overrun with them, and a small, fast, fearless terrier was the best pest control available. Stories also say Yorkies went down into coal mines for the same job, though that part is tradition rather than record. Either way, the mill years explain the modern Yorkie:
- Fearless. A dog that faced rats bigger than its own head does not back down. The AKC describes the Yorkie as a "tomboyish" old-style terrier under all that glamorous hair.
- Alert. Rats and strangers were spotted first by the terrier, so a Yorkie still announces every new sound. It is a superb little home security system.
- Prey drive. A rolling ball, a fluttering leaf: the chase instinct is still there, which is why Yorkies love fetch.
Then came the twist. As the breed got smaller and prettier, Victorian ladies adopted it as a fashionable lapdog, and generations of pampering added the cuddly, people-loving side. Today's Yorkie is both: a rat-catcher's courage with a lapdog's love.
Smoky: the 4-pound war hero 🎖️
In 1944 an American soldier in New Guinea found a tiny Yorkshire Terrier abandoned in a foxhole. Corporal Bill Wynne bought her for a few dollars and named her Smoky. She weighed about 4 lb (1.8 kg) and stood 7 in (18 cm) tall, and she flew on combat missions, slept in Wynne's tent and learned dozens of tricks.
Her most famous moment came at an airfield in the Philippines. Engineers needed to run a telegraph wire through a 70-foot (21 m) drainage pipe only 8 inches (20 cm) wide, half clogged with dirt. Digging would have taken three days with the airfield exposed to attack. Smoky, with the wire tied to her collar, crawled through the dark pipe alone and came out the other end in minutes. She also visited wounded soldiers in field hospitals and is often called the first therapy dog. In 2022 she became the first animal awarded the Animals in War & Peace Distinguished Service Medal. Breed historians credit Smoky with turning the then-obscure Yorkie into an American favorite after the war.

What is a Yorkie like? Personality 💛
- Big-dog confidence. The breed standard asks for a dog that carries its head high with "an air of self-importance." A Yorkie truly believes it is the largest dog in the room.
- Devoted and cuddly. Yorkies bond intensely with their people and love to be held and carried. They are happiest when they are with you.
- Playful and smart. They learn tricks quickly and enjoy games, and they stay puppy-like for years.
- Watchful. Expect a bark at the doorbell. Early socialization and a "quiet" cue keep it reasonable.
- Apartment-perfect. Two short walks and indoor play meet their needs, which is why Yorkies thrive in Seoul, Hong Kong and Bangkok apartments alike.
How big do Yorkies get? Size and the "teacup Yorkie" 📏
The AKC standard sets a maximum weight of 7 lb (3.2 kg), with 4–6 lb (1.8–2.7 kg) typical, and a height of about 7–8 in (18–20 cm). Puppies reach most of their adult size by 9–10 months.
A teacup Yorkie is not an official size or variety. It is a marketing term for a Yorkie expected to stay under about 4 lb (1.8 kg). Because the breed is already tiny, pushing size even lower raises the risk of low blood sugar, fragile bones and dental crowding. A responsible breeder shows you the puppy's current weight chart and both parents instead of promising a label, and chooses health over extreme smallness. At Kim's Pups we raise compact, well-structured Yorkies and share parent sizes for every puppy.
Yorkie colors: born black, grown into blue and tan 🎨
Yorkie puppies are born black and tan. Over the first one to two years the black softens to the breed's signature steel blue on the body while the head, chest and legs turn a rich gold-tan. Only this blue-and-tan adult coat is accepted by the standard; "parti," chocolate and all-gold Yorkies are not. Want the Yorkie look with white in the coat? That is a different breed: the Biewer Terrier, a tricolor cousin recognized by the AKC in 2021.
Do Yorkies shed? Coat and grooming ✂️
The Yorkie's coat is a single coat of fine, silky hair with almost no undercoat, more like human hair than dog fur. It sheds very little and produces less dander than most breeds, so Yorkies are one of the most popular choices for people with mild allergies. No dog is completely hypoallergenic, but the Yorkie is close.
Silky hair tangles, so a long show coat needs daily brushing and the classic topknot to keep hair out of the eyes. Most pet owners choose a puppy cut every 6–8 weeks, which cuts grooming to a quick brush a few times a week. Bathe every 2–4 weeks with a gentle shampoo, and keep the ears and the area around the eyes clean.
Yorkshire Terrier lifespan and health 🩺
Yorkies are long-lived, usually 13–16 years; a large UK study found an average of 13.3 years, and many reach 16 or more. Health topics to discuss with your vet and breeder include:
- Dental disease: the breed's most common problem. Tiny mouths crowd teeth, so brush daily and schedule dental checks.
- Collapsing trachea: a soft windpipe that can cause a honking cough. Always walk a Yorkie on a harness, never a collar.
- Luxating patella: a slipping kneecap common in toy breeds. Keep your Yorkie lean and use steps for the sofa.
- Low blood sugar in puppies: feed small, frequent meals in the first months, especially for very small puppies.
- Liver shunt: a congenital condition seen more often in Yorkies than most breeds. Ask the breeder about health screening.
Yorkies in Korea 🇰🇷
Before the Maltese took over, the Yorkshire Terrier was Korea's favorite small dog. In the apartment boom of the 1990s the Yorkie's tiny size, silky coat and big personality made it the dog to have, and millions of Koreans grew up with one. It remains in Korea's top 10 registered breeds today, and Korean breeders are known for compact Yorkies with correct blue-and-tan color and baby-doll faces. In the US the Yorkie has stayed in the AKC's top 15 for decades, ranking 11th in 2024.
