DIY Puppy Grooming: 3 Easy Steps | Home Care Guide 2024

Why Should We Care for Our Dogs at Home?

Hello!

This is Kim's Pups, Korean teacup puppy, teacup dog breeder and boutique.

Do you have a furry friend at home?

Just like we need to brush our teeth and take showers, dogs need regular care too.

While taking your pup to a professional groomer is great, there are many things we can do at home.

It's not just about saving money – it's a wonderful way to spend time with your dog and make sure they're healthy and happy!

Today, We'll show you three super easy ways to take care of your dog, shared by experts at Kim's Pups.

Don't worry – these methods are so simple that even kids can help (with adult supervision, of course)!

Basic Care Tips: Everything You Need to Know

1. Keeping Those Floppy Ears Clean

Just like we clean our ears, dogs need their ears cleaned too!

But here's something interesting: dogs' ears actually clean themselves most of the time.

We only need to help when they get really dirty.

What You'll Need:

  • Dog ear cleaner (make sure it's made specially for dogs!)
  • Soft cotton pads or gauze (like the ones in your first-aid kit)
  • Your dog's favorite treats

Follow These Easy Steps:

  1. First, put 4-5 drops of the ear cleaner inside your dog's ear
  2. Give the base of their ear a gentle massage (like giving them scratches!)
  3. Let them shake their head – it's like when you shake water out of your ears after swimming
  4. Wipe away any stuff that comes out with the cotton pad
  5. Don't forget the treat!

Important Safety Tips:

  • Never use Q-tips – they can hurt your dog's ears
  • If you see yellow or black stuff, or if the ear looks red or swollen, it's time for a vet visit

2. Your Dog's Eyes: Keeping them Bright and Healthy

One of the most important parts of keeping your pup healthy is taking care of their eyes.

Just like humans, dogs can get irritated eyes from dust, allergies, and other things.

Let's learn how to keep those puppy eyes clean and comfortable!

Here's What You Need:

  • Dog eye cleaner (remember, human eye drops aren't safe for dogs!)
  • Soft cotton pads or clean gauze
  • Tasty treats for rewards

The Simple Steps:

  1. Get your supplies ready and make your dog comfortable
  2. Gently hold the damp cotton pad against their eye area to soften any crusty bits
  3. Carefully wipe away the loosened gunk
  4. Dry the fur around their eyes to prevent skin problems
  5. Give them a yummy treat for being such a good pup!

When Should You Clean Their Eyes?

  • After walks (to remove dust and pollen)
  • Before and after baths
  • When you notice tear stains or eye boogers
  • Regular checking at least once a week

Safety Tips:

  • Never use your fingers to pick at dried eye gunk
  • Avoid using the cleaner too often - only when really needed
  • Watch out for reddish-brown tear stains - this means the air might be too dry

Really Important Stuff to Know:

  • If you see green or yellow discharge
  • If your dog keeps pawing at their eyes
  • If the eyes look red or swollen : These are signs that you should take your pup to the vet!

Fun Fact: Did you know that some dogs, especially small breeds like Shih Tzus and Malteses, naturally tear up more than others?

This is totally normal, but it means they might need more frequent eye cleaning to prevent staining of their fur.

Remember: Clean eyes = happy dog!

Regular eye care helps prevent infections and keeps your furry friend comfortable.

Plus, it's a great way to bond with your pet while checking that they're healthy.
