Where Do Afghan Hounds Come From? History, Picasso's Kabul & Why They "Ignore" You 🐾

Breedpedia Ep.04 — from the mountains of Afghanistan to Picasso's studio, in under a minute.

Quick answer: The Afghan Hound is an ancient sighthound from the mountains of Afghanistan, where it hunted by sight across rough, cold terrain. Its famous long, silky coat protected it from the mountain cold. The breed reached Britain in the early 1900s and was recognized by the American Kennel Club in 1926. Adults usually stand about 25–27 in (63–69 cm) at the shoulder, weigh roughly 50–60 lb (23–27 kg), and live about 12–14 years.

Where do Afghan Hounds come from? 🏔️

The Afghan Hound comes from the mountains and valleys of Afghanistan, in the region of the Hindu Kush. Locally, dogs of this type were known by names such as Tazi. The FCI, the international kennel federation, lists Afghanistan as the breed's country of origin.

It's also one of the oldest dog types we know of. Genetic studies of dog breeds place the Afghan Hound among the so-called "basal" or ancient breeds, whose DNA sits closer to the wolf than most modern breeds. That fits its reputation, though the exact age of the breed can't be pinned to a date.

Its job was hunting. Afghan Hounds chased game such as hares and gazelles, and by many accounts larger animals too, spotting prey by eye and running it down over rocks and steep slopes. They often worked without a handler right beside them, which meant making their own decisions at full speed. Remember that, because it explains a lot about their personality.

How the Afghan Hound reached the West 📜

In 1907, a British officer brought a hound named Zardin from Afghanistan to England. Zardin caused a stir at London dog shows, and for years he was held up as the picture of what an Afghan Hound should look like.

More dogs followed in the 1920s. Breeders brought in two main types: a lighter, finer-coated type associated with the desert plains, and a heavier-coated type from the mountains. Today's Afghan Hound grew out of a blend of the two. The AKC recognized the breed in 1926, and by the 1970s the Afghan had become a fashion icon and a regular winner in the show ring.

Why the long, silky coat? 🧥

That flowing hair looks glamorous, but it started as practical gear. In the cold, high mountains, a long coat kept the dog warm while it worked. Other features fit the same terrain:

  • Large, well-padded feet help on rocky and uneven ground.
  • Prominent hip bones are part of the breed standard and give the dog its springy, agile movement.
  • A short-haired "saddle" along the back is typical in adults.
  • A ring or curl at the tip of the tail is one of the breed's signature details.

Afghan Hounds come in many colors, including cream, black, black and tan, red, silver, brindle and domino. Many have a dark mask on the face.

Are Afghan Hounds really the "dumbest" dog? 🧠

You'll often read that the Afghan Hound is the least intelligent dog breed. That comes from Stanley Coren's well-known book The Intelligence of Dogs, where the Afghan Hound ranks last for working and obedience intelligence.

But that ranking measures one thing: how quickly a dog learns and obeys commands. A hound bred to chase prey on its own, far from any person, was never selected to wait for instructions. Owners have a well-worn joke about it: the Afghan Hound understands you perfectly. It just decides whether it agrees.

In practice, that means:

  • Training takes patience. Short, upbeat sessions with rewards work far better than repetition or harsh corrections.
  • Recall is unreliable. A strong prey drive means a running cat or rabbit can win over your voice. Keep them on a leash or in a securely fenced area.
  • They are sensitive. Pressure tends to make an Afghan shut down rather than try harder.

Picasso and his Afghan Hound, Kabul 🎨

In his later years, Pablo Picasso shared his home in the south of France with an Afghan Hound named Kabul, the same name as Afghanistan's capital. Kabul appears in Picasso's art from that period, including paintings with his wife, Jacqueline. It's a fitting pairing: a painter who broke shapes into angles, and a dog that already looked like a work of art.

A Korean connection: Snuppy, the first cloned dog 🇰🇷

In 2005, researchers at Seoul National University announced Snuppy, the world's first cloned dog. Snuppy was an Afghan Hound, and the name combines "SNU" and "puppy." Time magazine named him one of the inventions of the year.

What is an Afghan Hound like? Personality 💛

  • Dignified and independent. People often call them cat-like: affectionate, but not clingy.
  • Reserved with strangers. Polite rather than overly friendly, and not much of a guard dog.
  • Clownish at home. Once they trust you, many show a playful, silly side.
  • Fast. They need regular chances to run flat out in a safe, enclosed space, plus daily walks.
  • Calm indoors. With enough exercise, many are quiet house dogs.

Grooming an Afghan Hound ✂️

This is the biggest commitment. An adult coat needs thorough brushing several times a week, and many owners bathe weekly to keep it from matting. The coat changes from puppy fluff to the long adult coat at around a year old, and that stage tangles easily. Some owners use a snood, a fabric hood, to keep the long ear hair out of food bowls.

Afghan Hound lifespan and health 🩺

Afghan Hounds usually live about 12–14 years. Health topics to discuss with your vet and breeder include:

  • Anesthesia: like other sighthounds, they carry little body fat, so ask your vet about anesthetic choices before any procedure.
  • Eyes: cataracts can occur, so regular eye checks are worthwhile.
  • Hips and thyroid: hip dysplasia and hypothyroidism are seen in the breed.
  • Bloat (GDV): a risk for deep-chested dogs. Learn the warning signs and avoid hard exercise right after meals.
